Hobbies & interests

Rides a motorcycle. Snowboards in winter, plays basketball the rest of the year. Trains in the mornings. Shoots photos, mostly while travelling. Flies a drone, mostly badly. Runs two record bags: house in one, hip hop in the other. Tall enough that it comes up.

ABOUT ME

I design digital products end to end, from the first question to the shipped build.

Experience

My first clients were in California, back when I was still a student designing their sites and coding them myself. That’s where I learned a design only matters once people can use it.

Since then I’ve worked at agencies, startups, and in-house teams on SaaS and e-commerce products. Sometimes I was the only designer, sometimes one of several, and sometimes I led the team. I start from what can actually be built and push toward the ideal from there.

Collaboration

My best work has come from bringing developers in early, well before handoff. I came to design from engineering, so I ask what’s expensive to build before I ask what’s possible. That saves everyone the version of the project where a beautiful file gets rebuilt into something else.

Working with AI

Collaboration

AI is part of how I work now. It drafts copy, sketches out ideas and gives me ten variations while I’d still be on the first one. That saves a lot of time.

But it only goes somewhere useful when someone leads it, and some things I don’t hand over at all: talking to users, watching how they actually use the product, and deciding what’s worth building.

I’ve also been on the other side. At Hitachi Energy I designed a feature where an LLM identifies plants and tells crews how long each one has before it becomes a fire risk.

Outside of work

Most of my time away from the screen is spent outdoors, and some evenings I DJ.

I also mentor at Designlab. Students come in with fresh eyes and ask why something is designed the way it is, and “because that’s how it’s done” isn’t an answer. It keeps me asking the same question about my own work, and about most other things.

“From a collaboration standpoint, Olja is a true product partner. She challenges assumptions constructively, articulates trade-offs clearly, and communicates her design rationale with confidence. Deeply user-oriented, she keeps the user present in the room — consistently grounding decisions in the human experience. On a personal level, Olja brings a positive energy and has been a real delight to work with. I would gladly work with her again.”
